Pumpkin vs

Pumpkin & Figo: Key Differences

While Pumpkin and Figo both offer pet insurance plans for accidents & illnesses and optional wellness packages, there are some key coverage differences you should be aware of when choosing which provider is right for you and your pet. Let’s dig in…
All Pumpkin plans reimburse 90% of covered vet bills. Some Figo plans don’t.

Figo Pet Insurance plans offer reimbursement rate options ranging from 70% to 100% and annual coverage limit options ranging from $5k to unlimited. At Pumpkin, we try to take the guesswork out of choosing the right amount of coverage. All Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans are designed to give pet parents maximum cash back on covered vet bills with a high 90% reimbursement rate. They all offer a smart annual coverage limit of $10k for dogs or $7k for cats validated by recent claim data from thousands of customers,1 with higher annual limit options available (including an unlimited option) for pet parents looking for added peace of mind.

Pumpkin plans cover parasite infections, whether preventable or not. Figo plans don’t.

Heartworms, ticks, fleas, intestinal worms, and other parasites are year-round threats to dogs and cats across the US, indoors and out, and can be lethal if left untreated. While routine preventive meds and vaccines can help protect against parasites, research shows that most dogs and cats will suffer from a parasite-borne illness in their lifetime.17 For these reasons, Pumpkin insurance plans cover the diagnostics and treatment of parasite infections, regardless of whether there is a preventive treatment available or not. Figo insurance plans won’t cover any parasite infection where there is a preventive treatment available.

Pumpkin plans don’t charge extra to cover vet exam fees for accidents & illnesses.

Pumpkin insurance plans cover exam fees for accident- and illness-related vet visits at no extra cost – in-clinic and virtual visits included! This can be a huge cost saver as exam fees typically cost $50 to $7516 and are included in nearly every vet bill. Figo insurance plans charge an extra monthly fee to cover these vet exam fees, which can cost $20+ per month depending on your pet’s age and location.14

Pumpkin plans cover Rx supplements, and don’t charge extra to cover Rx food.

Rx food & supplements can be very helpful for pets suffering from a range of illnesses, from kidney disease to diabetes. As long as a food or supplement is prescribed to treat an eligible accident or illness and not for general health or weight maintenance, Pumpkin insurance plans will cover it. Figo insurance plans don’t cover Rx supplements at all. They will cover Rx food up to a reimbursement limit of $250/yr if you decide to pay Figo’s extra monthly fee for vet exam fee coverage.

Pumpkin plans don’t have a $500 reimbursement limit for behavioral issues.

If your pet needs treatment for a behavioral issue, your Pumpkin insurance plan would reimburse you for 90% of all eligible vet bills, up to your chosen annual limit each year. Figo insurance plans have a separate reimbursement limit of $500/yr for veterinary expenses related to treatment for behavioral issues. It can cost $500+ for a first consultation with a veterinary behaviorist.18 However, if you decide to pay the extra monthly fee for vet exam fee coverage, Figo will extend your reimbursement limit for behavioral issues to $1k/yr.

Pumpkin plans don’t have a 180-day waiting period for orthopedic conditions in dogs.

Hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia and knee ligament injuries of the CCL or ACL are common and can happen at any age. If surgery is needed to repair a hip or knee, it can cost thousands! Figo insurance plans have a 6-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions after enrollment, which can only be waived if your dog has a healthy orthopedic exam within the first 30 days and your vet can confirm there was no pre-existing condition at that time. Pumpkin insurance plans don’t have an extended waiting period for orthopedic conditions. The waiting period is the same for all conditions: 14 days.

It’s ALWAYS possible to get full value each year from Pumpkin’s optional wellness package.

Pumpkin’s wellness package is called Preventive Essentials. It’s not insurance, but an optional benefit you can add to your insurance plan for a monthly fee. Designed to help you plan and pay for crucial routine care that keeps your pet healthy, Preventive Essentials gives you a 100% refund each year for an annual wellness exam (we cover the exam fee), key vaccine(s), and important parasite screenings test(s). To get the most out of your package – all you have to do is use these 3 benefits.

Figo offers 2 optional Wellness Powerup packages (Wellness Basic and Wellness Plus) that can be added to your insurance plan for a monthly fee. They both offer reimbursement for routine care services from a menu of different service categories up to a capped amount per year. The only difference is Wellness Plus has a higher monthly fee and higher reimbursement caps. These plans can help you save money if you use most of the services offered, but not everything on the menu is a typical yearly expense (e.g., deworming, microchipping, spay/neuter procedure). Whatever benefits you don’t use in the year term, you lose – there are no carryovers.
