Yes! Thanks to new advancements in veterinary medicine, there are better diagnostics & treatments available to puppies than ever before. But they often come at a high cost. In fact, over a dog’s life, families can spend $60,000+ on care. From common ear infections to catastrophic injuries, accidents or illnesses can happen to any dog at any life stage.
Pumpkin Puppy Insurance plans help pet parents say ‘yes’ to the best care possible by covering up to 90% of eligible vet bills for accidents & illnesses. Just think… if a Pumpkin plan can cover $1,800 of a $2,000 emergency vet bill for an unexpected accident imagine how much it could save you over your pup’s life! The cost of your Pumpkin puppy insurance plan will depend on a few key factors:
Pet Species and Breed: Typically, dogs are more expensive to insure than cats. Also, certain breeds have more health problems than others and may also cost more to insure, so this is a factor that can impact the monthly cost of your plan.
Location: Average vet care costs in your city are taken into consideration, so pet parents in cities with less costly vet care may have lower monthly premiums (and vice versa).
Age: Older dogs are at a higher risk for developing certain illnesses, so you can expect to pay a lower monthly premium for your insurance plan than you would if you had an older dog. Just another reason why puppyhood is the perfect time to insure your pet!
Annual Coverage Limit: The amount your insurance plan is designed to cover in eligible vet bills each year will impact the cost of your plan. Higher annual limits usually result in higher monthly premiums, whereas lower annual limits result in lower ones.Annual Deductible: How much you choose to pay towards eligible vet bills each year before your cash back kicks in can also affect the monthly cost of your plan. In general, the higher the annual deductible, the lower the monthly premium.

The cost to insure a puppy would typically be lower than if you wanted to insure an adult dog. This is because older pets tend to be at a higher risk for developing several health conditions.
The best time to get a Pumpkin insurance plan is when your dog is a puppy, so it can cover accidents or illnesses that may happen in the future. If a condition occurs before you enroll or during the waiting period, your Pumpkin plan (like most insurance plans) would not be able to cover it. So... the earlier you enroll in your pet’s life, the more your plan can cover.
No matter what your health care concerns are for your puppy, from everyday illnesses like kennel cough to sudden injuries like bone fractures, the best puppy insurance plan for you is the one that helps give you peace of mind for your pup’s care. Your puppy deserves nothing less than a pet insurance plan with super-extensive accident & illness coverage.

No – puppies of all breeds are welcome to enroll in Pumpkin Puppy Insurance plans as long as they are 8 weeks and older. If you’re curious, some common breeds and mixed breeds we see at Pumpkin include Labrador Retriever and Retriever Mixes, Golden Retrievers, Golden Doodles, Chihuahua Mixes, French Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Poodles, and Cavapoos!
We always recommend researching your puppy’s breed so you have all the info you need about their potential health needs as they grow. Check out our breed directory to learn more about your pup.
While you may see these terms used interchangeably, they refer to the same thing. Some providers use the terms pet health insurance or puppy health insurance to refer to their plans, but it’s important to remember that pet insurance plans are different to human health insurance plans. They work differently and puppy insurance plans are designed to cover unexpected accidents and illnesses rather than all types of puppy health care. Oddly enough, pet insurance falls under property & casualty insurance.
While Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans offer extensive coverage for accidents & illnesses, they don’t cover elective procedures like spaying and neutering. You can learn more about this preventive care procedure here.
For a full list of what Pumpkin insurance plans do and don’t cover, check out a sample policy.Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans are designed to cover the diagnostics and treatments your puppy needs to get better when unexpected accidents or illnesses occur. They are not designed to cover routine wellness care that puppies need to stay healthy year-round, like vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases.
That said, we know insurance alone won’t solve your puppy’s health & wellness needs. It’s why Pumpkin is the first-ever pet insurance provider to offer a wellness package specifically designed for puppies called Preventive Essentials. Preventive Essentials is not an insurance plan, but an optional wellness package you can add for your pet to get a refund for 4 puppy vaccines received at the vet before or after joining Pumpkin. Plus, you’ll also get a refund for an annual wellness exam fee and fecal “poop” test for intestinal worms. Not available in CA, ME, MO, MT, RI, VT, and WA.If your puppy has a condition that occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during the waiting period, it’s considered “pre-existing” and won’t be covered by your Pumpkin insurance plan – at least at first. If the pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, your Pumpkin plan could cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
It’s important to note that not all pet insurances will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!
All that said, having an incurable pre-existing condition, or a knee or hind leg ligament condition, doesn't mean you shouldn’t sign up for a Pumpkin plan. You can always enroll your puppy and get covered for new conditions that develop down the road. Have questions? Call us at 1‑866‑ARF‑MEOW (1‑866‑273‑6369) or email [email protected].Yep! You can enroll in a Pumpkin Pet Insurance plan any time during your puppy’s life starting at 8 weeks old. However, if your pup’s accident occurs before you enroll or during the waiting period, your Pumpkin plan (like most insurance plans) would not be able to cover it.
That said, if your pup’s condition is curable (e.g., toxic ingestion, bite wound, or broken bone), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, your Pumpkin plan could cover the same accident if it occurred again in the future. This won’t be the case with plans from all puppy insurance providers.
To sum it up, while your Pumpkin plan wouldn’t be able to cover an accident that occurred before enrolling or during the waiting period, you can absolutely still enroll your puppy and get coverage for new accidents or illnesses that happen in the future! We do! We know pet care can be expensive – especially when you have a multi-pet family to budget for. Unlike some other pet insurance plans out there, Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans offer a 10% multi-pet discount for all additional pets. That means you get 10% off a plan for each additional pet you enroll. When you get a quote for multiple pets, you’ll see this discount applied at checkout.
