FAQs
Thanks to new advancements in veterinary medicine, there are better diagnostics & treatments available to kittens and cats than ever before. But they often come at a high cost. In fact, over a cat’s life, families spend $47,000+ on care. From common respiratory infections, to catastrophic injuries, accidents or illnesses can happen to any cat at any life stage.
When catastrophes happen, Pumpkin insurance plans help kitten parents say ‘yes’ to the best care possible by paying back up to 90% of covered vet bills. Just think… if a Pumpkin plan can cover $1,800 of a $2,000 vet bill for an unexpected accident or illness – imagine how much it could save you over your kitty’s life! The cost of your Pumpkin Kitten Insurance plan will depend on a few key factors:
Pet Species and Breed: Typically, cats are less expensive to insure than dogs. Also, certain breeds have more health problems than others and may also cost more to insure, so this is a factor that can impact the monthly cost of your plan.
Location: Average vet care costs in your city are taken into consideration, so kitten parents in cities with less costly vet care may have lower monthly premiums (and vice versa).
Age: Older cats are at a higher risk for developing certain illnesses, so you can expect to pay a lower monthly premium for your insurance plan than you would if you had an older cat. Just another reason why kittenhood is the perfect time to insure your pet!
Annual Deductible: How much you choose to pay towards eligible vet bills each year before your cash back kicks in can also affect the monthly cost of your plan. In general, the higher the annual deductible, the lower the monthly premium.

Pumpkin insurance plans offer some of the most extensive coverage on the market. They cover a wide variety of accidents & illnesses as well as veterinary care options & services to diagnose and treat them. Pumpkin plans also cover key things that some insurance plans exclude or charge extra monthly add-on fees for. These include eligible dental illnesses; behavioral issues; hereditary conditions; parasite infections; prescription food & supplements³; physical therapy; alternative therapies; and in-office + virtual vet exam fees for accidents & illnesses!
Most kitten insurance plans, including Pumpkin plans, don’t cover “pre-existing conditions” that occur or show symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. However, if a pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, Pumpkin plans could cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered. It’s important to note that not all kitten insurances will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!
Pumpkin plans also don’t cover breeding costs, spaying and neutering, cosmetic or elective procedures, non-illness related dental teeth cleanings, and routine care services such as vaccines for parasite prevention. As with most accident & illness insurance plans, Pumpkin plans are designed to cover unexpected veterinary care your kitten needs when they’re hurt or sick, and these services don’t fall into that category. See a sample policy for all coverage benefits & exclusions.
The best time to get a Pumpkin insurance plan is when your cat is a kitten, so it can cover accidents or illnesses that may happen in the future. If a condition occurs before you enroll or during the waiting period, your Pumpkin plan (like most insurance plans) would not be able to cover it. So... the earlier you enroll in your pet’s life, the more your plan can cover.
In addition, aging cats are more prone to developing certain illnesses, making them more expensive to insure than kittens. Insure your kitten while they’re young, and you can help them get the best veterinary care as they grow.So worth it! Pumpkin Kitten Insurance plans can help cover the costs of eligible veterinary care when your kitten gets sick or hurt throughout their life. While an indoor lifestyle may help your cat avoid certain illnesses or accidents – there are several others that it can’t.
From chronic conditions like diabetes to hereditary conditions like polycystic kidney disease, there are plenty of illnesses that your cat can develop regardless of whether they’re indoor or outdoor. Not to mention, having a kitten with an indoor lifestyle won’t prevent them from jumping off the fridge and breaking a bone, snacking on a houseplant, or swallowing a ball of yarn when you’re not home. Accidents can happen to cats of all lifestyles. The best way for kitten parents to protect their indoor kitty (and cash!) is to get them covered by insurance. No matter your health care concerns for your kitten, from everyday illnesses like parasite infections to sudden injuries like bone fractures, you want to help get your kitten the best veterinary care when they get hurt or sick. The best kitten insurance plan for you is one that helps you do just that. You deserve nothing less than a kitten insurance plan with super-extensive accident & illness coverage.

While you may see these terms used interchangeably, they refer to the same thing. Some providers use the terms pet health insurance or kitten health insurance to refer to their plans, but it’s important to remember that pet insurance plans are different from human health insurance plans. They work differently, and kitten insurance plans are typically designed to cover unexpected accidents and illnesses rather than all types of kitten health care. Oddly enough, pet insurance falls under property & casualty insurance.
Unlike a human health insurance HMO, your Pumpkin insurance plan’s coverage isn’t limited to a “network” of health care providers. Since you get paid back directly for eligible veterinary expenses you pay for upfront, your kitten is free to receive treatment from any licensed veterinarian, specialist, emergency clinic or hospital you choose in the U.S. or Canada! This way, you can help your kitten get the best veterinary medicine from your preferred clinic.
Pumpkin insurance plans offer coverage in all 50 states. That means that no matter which state you live in or travel to, whether it’s Washington, California, Ohio, Texas, or New York, you can help your cat get the eligible accident & illness care they may need.
There are no breed restrictions. Kittens of all breeds are welcome to enroll in Pumpkin insurance plans as long as they are 8 weeks and older. Pumpkin is proud to insure a diverse range of mixed breed kitties like Domestic Shorthairs and Longhairs, as well as pure breeds such as Maine Coons, Persians, Ragdolls and more – we love them all! We always recommend researching your kitten’s breed so you have all the info you need about their potential health needs as they grow. Check out our cat breed directory to learn more about your purrfect kitty.
While Pumpkin Kitten Insurance plans offer extensive coverage for accidents & illnesses, they don’t cover elective procedures like spaying and neutering.
For a full list of what Pumpkin insurance plans do and don’t cover, check out a sample pet insurance policy.Pumpkin Kitten Insurance plans are designed to cover the diagnostics and treatments your kitten needs to get better when unexpected accidents or illnesses occur. They are not designed to cover routine wellness care that kittens need to stay healthy year-round, like vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases.
That said, we know kitten insurance alone won’t solve your kitty’s health & wellness needs. It’s why we worked with vets to create a unique wellness package called Preventive Essentials. Preventive Essentials is not an insurance plan, but an optional wellness package you can add for your pet if you want refunds each year for crucial wellness care, including an annual wellness exam fee; vaccine; and fecal “poop” test for intestinal worms. Not available in CA, ME, MO, MT, RI, VT, and WA.If your kitten has a condition that occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during the waiting period, it’s considered “pre-existing” and won’t be covered by your Pumpkin insurance plan – at least at first. If the pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, your Pumpkin plan could cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
It’s important to note that not all pet insurances will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!
All that said, having an incurable pre-existing condition, or a knee or hind leg ligament condition, doesn't mean you shouldn’t sign up for a Pumpkin plan. You can always enroll your kitten and get covered for new conditions that develop down the road. Have questions? Call us at 1‑866‑ARF‑MEOW (1‑866‑273‑6369) or email [email protected].
