Yes! Thanks to new advancements in veterinary medicine, there are better diagnostics & treatments available to dogs than ever before. But they often come at a high cost. In fact, over a dog’s life, parents can expect to spend $60K+ on care. From common ear infections to catastrophic injuries, accidents or illnesses can happen to any dog at any life stage.
When things happen, Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans help pet parents say ‘yes’ to the best care possible by covering up to 90% of eligible vet bills for accidents & illnesses. Just think... if a Pumpkin plan can pay you back $1,800 of a covered $2,000 emergency vet bill, imagine how much it could save you over your pup’s life.
Pet Species and Breed: Typically, dogs are more expensive to insure than cats. Also, certain breeds have more health problems than others and may also cost more to insure, so this is a factor that can impact the monthly cost of your plan.
Location: Average vet care costs in your city are taken into consideration, so pet parents in cities with less costly vet care may have lower monthly premiums (and vice versa).
Age: Older dogs are at a higher risk for developing certain illnesses, so you can expect to pay a higher monthly premium for an adult or senior vs. a puppy. That said, Pumpkin insurance plans will NEVER reduce or limit coverage for aging pets.
Annual Coverage Limit: The amount your insurance plan is designed to cover in eligible vet bills each year will impact the cost of your plan. Higher annual limits usually result in higher monthly premiums, whereas lower annual limits result in lower ones.
Annual Deductible: How much you choose to pay towards eligible vet bills each year before your cash back kicks in can also affect the monthly cost of your plan. In general, the higher the annual deductible, the lower the monthly premium.

Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans offer some of the most extensive accident & illness coverage on the market. They cover a wide variety of accidents & illnesses as well as veterinary care options & services to diagnose and treat them. Pumpkin plans also cover key things that some insurance plans exclude or charge extra add-on fees for. These include dental illnesses; behavioral issues; hereditary conditions; parasite infections; prescription food & supplements³; physical therapy; alternative therapies; and in-office + virtual vet exam fees for accidents & illnesses!
Most dog insurance plans, including Pumpkin plans, don’t cover “pre-existing conditions” that occur or show symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. However, if a pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, bone fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, Pumpkin plans could cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
It’s important to note that not all dog insurance plans will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans.
Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans also don’t cover breeding costs, spaying and neutering, cosmetic or elective procedures, and non-illness-related dental cleanings. As with most accident & illness insurance, Pumpkin plans are designed to cover unexpected veterinary care your pup needs when they’re hurt or sick, and these services don’t fall into that category. See a sample policy for all coverage benefits & exclusions.
It’s easy – just follow these 3 simple steps:
-
When your dog is sick or hurt, take them to any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada for treatment, and pay as usual when you leave.
-
Log in to your account on www.pumpkin.care to file a claim for any eligible veterinary expenses. Simply follow the prompts to enter your claim details, upload a copy of your itemized vet bill, and submit! It’s fast, easy, and 100% digital.
-
Your claim will be processed quickly and you’ll be reimbursed via check or direct deposit for up to 90% of covered costs up to the annual limit, after your annual deductible has been met.
-
Absolutely not! Dogs of all breeds are welcome to enroll in Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans as long as they are at least 8 weeks old. If you’re curious, some common breeds and mixed breeds we see at Pumpkin include Labrador Retriever and Retriever Mixes, Golden Retrievers, Golden Doodles, Chihuahua Mixes, French Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Poodles, and Cavapoos!
The best dog insurance plan will be the one that helps give you peace of mind for your dog’s future care. Whether it’s emergency accidents you’re worried about, or your dog’s risk of developing a debilitating illness later in life (like hip dysplasia), you want to find a dog insurance plan that can offer extensive coverage for accidents & illnesses.
It really pays to research different dog insurance plans to find the one that best suits your needs – and we want to help! We have a helpful comparison page here where you can research different providers’ plans and compare coverage options. While you may see these terms used interchangeably, they refer to the same thing. Some providers use the terms pet health insurance or dog health insurance to refer to their plans, but it’s important to remember that pet insurance plans are different to human health insurance plans. They work differently and pet insurance plans are designed to cover accidents and illnesses rather than all types of dog health care. Oddly enough, pet insurance falls under property & casualty insurance.
Unlike a human health insurance HMO, Pumpkin Dog Insurance plan coverage isn’t limited to a “network” of healthcare providers. Since Pumpkin plans reimburse you directly for eligible veterinary expenses you pay for upfront, your dog is free to receive treatment from any licensed veterinarian, specialist, emergency clinic, or hospital you choose in the U.S. or Canada. This way, you have help accessing the best veterinary medicine from your preferred clinic.
Pumpkin insurance plans offer coverage in all 50 states. That means that no matter which state you live in or travel to, whether it’s California, Texas, Florida, or New York, you can help your dog get the eligible accident & illness care they may need.
Unlike some dog insurance plans, Pumpkin plans cover dental illnesses (including periodontal disease AKA gum disease), along with any exams, X-rays, treatment, surgery, and prescription meds used to diagnose or treat them. Pumpkin plans also cover tooth extractions for dental injuries.
Pumpkin plans do not cover annual dental cleanings and certain cosmetic or elective services. For a full list of what Pumpkin insurance plans do and don’t cover, check out a sample policy.
While Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans offer extensive coverage for accidents & illnesses, they don’t cover elective procedures like spaying and neutering.

Pumpkin Dog Insurance plans are designed to cover the diagnostics and treatments your dog needs to get better when unexpected accidents or illnesses occur. They are not designed to cover routine wellness care that dogs need to stay healthy year-round, like vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases.
That said, we know insurance alone won’t solve your pup’s health & wellness needs. It’s why we worked with vets to create a unique wellness package called Preventive Essentials. Preventive Essentials is not insurance, but an optional benefit you can add to your Pumpkin insurance plan if you want refunds each year for crucial wellness care, including an annual wellness exam fee; 2 vaccines; 1 fecal “poop” test for intestinal worms; and 1 heartworm & tick disease test. Not available in CA, ME, MO, MT, RI, VT, and WA.
If your dog has a condition that occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during the waiting period, it’s considered “pre-existing” and won’t be covered by your Pumpkin insurance plan – at least at first. If the pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, your Pumpkin plan could cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions.
All that said, having an incurable pre-existing condition, or a knee or hind leg ligament condition, doesn't mean you shouldn’t join the Pumpkin pack! You can always enroll your dog and get covered for new eligible conditions that develop down the road. Have questions? Call us at 1‑866‑ARF‑MEOW (1‑866‑273‑6369) or email [email protected].
We do! We know pet care can be expensive – especially when you have a multi-pet family to budget for. Unlike some other pet insurance plans out there, Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans offer a 10% multi-pet discount for all additional pets! That means you get 10% off a plan for each additional fur family member you enroll. When you fetch a quote for multiple pets, you’ll see this discount applied at checkout.
