Here’s a hypothetical example of a kitty with a bladder stone…

vs

Kitty without Pumpkin

insurance plan

Text chat between a vet and a cat mom. The vet says ""The X-rays show a bladder stone. To help Tom feel better ASAP and prevent further complications, I suggest we do a cystotomy to remove it. It's common surgery, and most cats recover quickly." The mom replies "How much does a cystotomy cost?" The vet responds "We'll email the estimate, but most likely an additional $1,500." The mom is surprised and says "Wow, that's pricey. Any other options?" The vet answers "The alternative is to try and dissolve the stone with a special diet, but it could be weeks of discomfort for Tom before it fully dissolves, and it may not work at all. We'd have to wait & see." Tom's mom says "Not ideal I know, but I think we'll have to go with the diet and hope for the best."

In the End...

Poor Tom’s bladder stone did not respond to the special diet, and he spent the next 2 weeks in serious discomfort. After another vet visit and round of X-rays & tests, mom finally agreed to the cystotomy. While Tom recovered quickly, mom was left with major regrets – and more vet bills.

Final Vet Bill: $2,100³

Mom pays $2,100

(Mom pays the bill in full)

Text chat starts the same between a vet and a cat mom. The vet says "The X-rays show a bladder stone. To help Tom feel better ASAP and prevent further complications, I suggest we do a cystotomy to remove it. It's common surgery, and most cats recover quickly." The mom replies quickly "Anything for Tommy boy!" The vet responds "Good call! We actually have an opening later today". Mom is excited to get Tommy better "Let's schedule it"
The cat is healed and responds in love "Thanks, hu-mom!"

In the End...

With peace of mind that her Pumpkin plan would cover it, mom scheduled the cystotomy right away, and the vet was able to surgically remove the bladder stone as planned. As a result, Tom was back to his happy-go-fluffy self in no time, and mom wasn’t stressed about finances.

Final Vet Bill: $1,650³

Mom pays $165

(Pumpkin plan pays back $1,485)

Want refunds for routine wellness care your kitty needs to stay healthy?

Of course you do! It’s why we worked with vets to create Preventive Essentials. It’s not insurance, but an optional wellness package you can add to your plan to get refunds for annual wellness visits, vaccines, and more.

Cat celebrating Preventitive Essentials and the routine services it includes

Some questions we get asked all the time...

  • We know choosing a cat insurance provider is a big decision, and we want to help you make the best, most informed choice for your kitty. For this reason, we thought we’d highlight some key ways Pumpkin insurance plans stand out from the pack:

    • #1 rated pet insurance provider on Google in 2024

    • $5k-unlimited annual maximum coverage limit options

    • Everyone gets extensive coverage (no need to buy a bunch of extra insurance plan add-ons)

    • Pumpkin plans cover key conditions some insurance plans exclude, like dental illnesses, behavioral issues, hereditary conditions, parasite infections and parasitic diseases

    • Pumpkin plans cover in-clinic + virtual vet exam fees for accidents & illness – no extra add-on fees required

    • Pumpkin plans cover physical therapy and prescription food & supplements for covered conditions – no extra add-on fees required

  • There are no breed-specific restrictions. Cats of all breeds are welcome to enroll in Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans as long as they are 8 weeks and older. Pumpkin is proud to offer plans for a diverse range of mixed breed kitties like Domestic Shorthairs and Longhairs, as well as pure breeds such as Maine Coons, Persians, Ragdolls and more – we love them all!

  • The cost of your Pumpkin Cat Insurance plan will depend on a few key factors:

Breed: Certain breeds have more health problems than others and cost a little more to insure, so this is a factor that can impact the monthly cost of your plan.

Location: Average vet care costs in your city are taken into consideration, so pet parents in cities with less costly vet care may have lower monthly premiums (and vice versa).

Age: Older cats are at a higher risk for developing certain illnesses, so you can expect to pay a higher monthly premium for an adult or senior vs. a kitten. That said, Pumpkin insurance plans will NEVER reduce or limit coverage for aging pets.

Annual Coverage Limit: The amount your insurance plan is designed to cover in eligible vet bills each year will impact the cost of your plan. Higher annual limits usually result in higher monthly premiums, whereas lower annual limits result in lower ones.

Annual Deductible: How much you choose to pay towards eligible vet bills each year before your cash back kicks in can also affect the monthly cost of your plan. In general, the higher the annual deductible, the lower the monthly premium.

To find out how much a Pumpkin Cat Insurance plan will cost for your kitty, fetch a free quote today.

  • It’s easy – just follow these 3 simple steps:

    1. When your cat is sick or hurt, take them to any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada for treatment, and pay as usual when you leave.

    2. Log in to your account on pumpkin.care to file a claim for any eligible veterinary expenses. Simply follow the prompts to enter your claim details, upload a copy of your itemized vet bill, and submit! It’s fast, easy, and 100% digital.

    3. Your claim will be processed quickly and you’ll be reimbursed via check or direct deposit for up to 90% of covered costs up to the annual limit, after your annual deductible has been met.

  • Yes, paws down! Thanks to new advancements in veterinary medicine, there are better diagnostics & treatments available to cats than ever before. But they often come at a high cost. In fact, over a cat’s life, families spend $12,000+ on vet care alone! From common respiratory infections, to catastrophic injuries, accidents or illnesses can happen to any cat at any life stage.

When catastrophes happen, Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans help pet parents say ‘yes’ to the best care possible by paying back up to 90% of eligible vet bills. Just think… if a Pumpkin plan can cover $1,800 of a $2,000 emergency vet bill for an unexpected accident – imagine how much it could save you over your cat’s life!

  • So worth it! Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans can help cover the costs of veterinary care when your cat gets sick or hurt throughout their life. While an indoor lifestyle may help your cat avoid certain illnesses or accidents – there are several others that it can’t.

From chronic conditions like diabetes to hereditary conditions like polycystic kidney disease, there are plenty of illnesses that your cat can develop regardless of whether they’re indoor or outdoor. Not to mention, having a cat with an indoor lifestyle won’t prevent them from jumping off the fridge and breaking a bone, snacking on a houseplant, or swallowing a ball of yarn when you’re not home. Accidents can happen to cats of all lifestyles. One of the best ways to protect your indoor cat (and your cash!) is to get them covered by insurance.

  • You can! Enrolling your older or senior cat in a cat insurance plan is a great way to help support them and help them get essential medical care for accidents & illnesses throughout their golden years. Unlike some other pet insurance plans, there’s no upper age limit to enroll in a Pumpkin plan. All cats aged 8 weeks and up are eligible to enroll.

  • Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans offer some of the most extensive coverage on the market. They cover a wide variety of accidents & illnesses as well as veterinary care options & services to diagnose and treat them. Pumpkin plans also cover key things that some insurance plans exclude or charge extra monthly add-on fees for. These include dental illnesses; behavioral issues; hereditary conditions; parasite infections; prescription food & supplements; physical therapy; alternative therapies; and in-office + virtual vet exam fees for accidents & illnesses!

Most cat insurance plans, including Pumpkin plans, don’t cover “pre-existing conditions” that occur or show symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. However, if a pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, Pumpkin plans would cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.

It’s important to note that not all cat insurances will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!

Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans also don’t cover breeding costs, spaying and neutering, cosmetic or elective procedures, and non-illness related dental teeth cleanings, and routine care services such as vaccines for parasite prevention. As with most accident & illness insurance, Pumpkin plans are designed to cover unexpected veterinary care your cat needs when they’re hurt or sick, and these services don’t fall into that category. See a sample policy for all coverage benefits & exclusions.

  • While you may see these terms used interchangeably, they refer to the same thing. Some providers use the terms pet health insurance or cat health insurance to refer to their plans, but it’s important to remember that pet insurance plans are different to human health insurance plans. They work differently and pet insurance plans are designed to cover unexpected accidents and illnesses rather than all types of cat health care. Oddly enough, pet insurance falls under property & casualty insurance.

  • When considering cat insurance, it might be that you want to make sure future accidents like broken bones or swallowed objects will be covered. Maybe you want to know that your cat would be able to get the care they need for common cat illnesses like urinary tract infections and upper respiratory infections. Whatever your specific concerns are, the best cat insurance plan is the one that can give you peace of mind for your cat’s future health care needs. Your kitty deserves nothing less than a cat insurance plan with super-extensive accident & illness coverage.

It’s a great idea to research different cat insurance plans to find the one that best suits your needs – and we want to help! We have a helpful comparison page here where you can research different providers’ plans and compare coverage options.

  • Unlike a human health insurance HMO, your Pumpkin Pet Insurance plan’s coverage isn’t limited to a “network” of health care providers. Since you get paid back directly, your cat is free to receive treatment from any licensed veterinarian, specialist, emergency clinic or hospital you choose in the U.S. or Canada!

  • Pumpkin insurance plans offer coverage in all 50 states. That means that no matter which state you live in or travel to, whether it’s Washington, California, Ohio, Texas, or New York, you can help your cat get the eligible accident & illness care they may need.

  • Unlike some pet insurance plans, Pumpkin plans cover dental illnesses (including periodontal disease AKA gum disease), along with any exams, X-rays, treatment, surgery, and prescription meds used to diagnose or treat them. Pumpkin plans also cover tooth extractions for dental injuries.

Pumpkin plans do not cover annual dental cleanings and certain cosmetic or elective services. For a full list of what Pumpkin insurance plans do and don’t cover, check out a sample policy.

  • While Pumpkin Cat Insurance plans offer extensive coverage for accidents & illnesses, they don’t cover elective procedures like spaying and neutering. You can learn more about this preventive care procedure here.

For a full list of what Pumpkin insurance plans do and don’t cover, check out a sample pet insurance policy.

  • Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans are designed to cover the diagnostics and treatments your cat needs to get better when unexpected accidents or illnesses occur. They are not designed to cover routine wellness care that cats need to stay healthy year-round, like vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases.

That said, we know pet insurance alone won’t solve your kitty’s health & wellness needs. It’s why we worked with vets to create a unique wellness package called Preventive Essentials. Preventive Essentials isn’t insurance, but an optional benefit you can add to your Pumpkin insurance plan if you want refunds each year for crucial wellness care, including an annual wellness exam fee; vaccine; and fecal “poop” test for intestinal worms.

  • If your cat has a condition that occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during the waiting period, it’s considered “pre-existing” and won’t be covered by your Pumpkin insurance plan – at least at first. If the pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days, your Pumpkin plan would cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.

It’s important to note that not all pet insurances will cover eligible cured pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!

All that said, having an incurable pre-existing condition, or a knee or hind leg ligament condition, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t join the Pumpkin pack! You can always enroll your kitten and get covered for new conditions that develop down the road. Have questions? Call us at 1‑866‑ARF‑MEOW (1‑866‑273‑6369) or email [email protected].

  • Yes! We know pet care can be expensive – especially when you have a multi-pet family to budget for. Unlike some other pet insurance plans out there, Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans offer a 10% multi-pet discount for all additional pets! That means you get 10% off a plan for each additional fur family member you enroll. When you fetch a quote for multiple pets, you’ll see this discount applied at checkout.
